Cheap Ferry to Bergen Port

Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and located on the west coast of the country. Bergen Port is well established as the main port in Norway and gateway to the famous Fjords. Almost 200,000 passengers use the port between May and September and currently only one ferry operator provides sailings to Denmark, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

Being so well established, Bergen Port has excellent road connections with the main route being the RV7 from Oslo. The ferry port is clearly signposted. Local bus and train stations are in Stromgaten and are only a five minute walk from Bergen ferry terminal.

The facilities at Bergen Port are quite good. In addition to a coffee shop selling light meals and snacks there are vending machines providing a selection of hot and cold drinks. Passengers can make use of luggage lockers and toilets include disabled facilities. The ferry terminal is accessible by wheelchair.

Smyril Line is the only ferry company operating from Bergen Port and provides the following services: one weekly night crossing to Hanstholm in Denmark with a journey time of 18 hours. This service does not run between mid June and early September; one weekly crossing to Seysdisfjord in Iceland taking about 48 hours; and one weekly crossing to Torshaven in the Faroe Islands taking about 24 hours.

Smyril Line ferries are equipped to make the long journeys enjoyable. Passengers can relax in the swimming pool and use onboard gym and sauna. There’s a children’s play area and a choice of shops. Passenger lounges have panoramic windows providing views across the Atlantic and the food onboard is good. Cabins have en-suite facilities with a bath and WC, a TV, sofa bed, wardrobes, trouser press, small desk and personal fridge.

Ferry passengers staying in Bergen find the wooden houses lining the narrow cobblestone streets give the city a unique setting. Bergen has many attractions, including the Funicular railway, Edvard Grieg museum and the Bergen Aquarium with one of the biggest European collections of marine fauna.
