Brindisi is the gateway port to the Eastern Mediterranean. The harbour serves as a ferry port for other locations in Greece and Italy, as well as a freight port for ocean steamers and small freight ships. The city itself boasts some interesting local history. The harbour is the site of a castle built by Frederick II, which now operates as a modern day prison.
