Despite being the largest of the seven Ionian Islands, Cephalonia has only 32,000 inhabitants, although this number increases significantly during the summer season. There are a number of ports on the island such as Fiscardo, Sami, Pessada, Ag. Eufimia, Poros and Argostoli. Most ferries stop at Sami, at the northern tip of the island and 25kms from the island’s capital, Argostoli.
Facilities vary in each of the ports but the terminal is usually quite basic. However, many of the ports are within easy reach of amenities such as shops and restaurants, in particular the harbour towns of Argostoli and Fisardo are particularly well placed. Ferries from Kylii and Patras operate all year, and there are additional routes during the summer season.
Fiscardo is a busy port which receives both car and passenger ferries during the summer months. Ferries sail between Fiscardo and Ithaca, as well as Lefkada on a daily basis during this peak season. The town itself has distinct charm, with Venetian houses overlooking the picturesque harbour.
The port of Sami provides connections to Patras and Corfu. Ferries sail to Ithaca and Patras on a daily basis. The journey time between Sami and Itaca is just one hour, with a slightly longer sailing of three hours between Sami and Patras. Ferries to the popular holiday resort island of Corfu make the crossing three times per week.
The principal harbour of Argostoli offers connections to Kilini several time each day, while ferries bound for Zante depart from Pessada twice daily. This crossing takes just one hour. The port of Poros is connected to Kilini and the ferry crossing takes 1 hour, 30 minutes.
All ferries are well equipped for disabled passengers, with good wheelchair access and disabled toilets. Boarding assistance is available although passengers should advise the ferry company of any special needs when booking. The island has a good road network and bus service, while ferries are the only transport to mainland.
