It is possible to travel directly from Liverpool to Douglas in the Isle of Man, by ferry. Whilst this may not be the quickest mode of transport, you may find that the convenience is worth it, given the relaxed nature of ferry transportation. The crossings are regular and are provided by the Steam Packet Company who are one of The Isle of Man’s biggest maritime companies.
Normally the route will take up to four hours but some of the vessels operated by the Steam Packet Company are faster and only take around two hours. These particular ferries are called ‘Fast Craft’ ferries and only operate during certain times during the year. You can choose Fastcraft, if available, when you book but it will cost you a bit extra.
The Liverpool end of the route involves one of the UK’s principal ferry ports. Striding both banks of the Mersey River, this busy port provides a wealth of facilities such as ATMs, phones, baby changing and a good selection of eateries offering food at a range of different prices. The port prides itself on access to disabled passengers and you will find disabled toilets here, whilst wheelchair access will allow people to easily move about the whole terminal.
On the other hand, Douglas port is fairly modest in size, despite serving the whole of the Isle of Man. None the less, you will find basic amenities here as well. A short excursion into Douglas town centre will give more choice in terms of finding places to eat and accessing banks, shops and the post office.
You may be offered a moderate range of refreshment which can be purchased inside the ferries. Note that smoking is prohibited on board the vessels and also in the main public areas inside the port terminals.
