Holland’s North Sea coastline has been important to the shipping trade for many years. The country has strong trade links to other European countries, including the UK, and is home to Europe’s biggest and busiest port, Rotterdam. There are three providers of freight ferries to Holland from the UK. They are DFDS Tor Line, Stena Line Freight and P&O Ferries Freight. Stena Line freight provide the most comprehensive service with three routes from two UK ports; Harwich in the south of England and the port of Killingholme, further north near Hull.

There are daily sailings from Killingholme to the Hook of Holland and they are exclusively for freight. The Hook of Holland is well-connected to Rotterdam and the south of Holland by the A20. Alternatively, The Hague and the east of Holland can be easily reached on the A4. Stena Line also has twice daily sailings to the Hook of Holland, from Harwich, as well as crossings to Rotterdam itself.

For travellers looking to arrive closer to Amsterdam, the DFDS Tor Line crossing from Newcastle to Ijmuiden is highly recommended. They may operate freight ferries on this route, but these ferries are very much like cruise ships and have a wide range of facilities. There are seven crossings a week which take just over 16 hours.

P&O Ferries Freight also operate freight ferries from Hull to Rotterdam. Both ports are well-equipped with excellent handling facilities. The ferries are comfortable and drivers will have every opportunity to rest before their onward journey. Rotterdam remains one of the most important entry points for freight ferries to Holland.
