The city of Portsmouth is on England’s southern English Channel coastline opposite the Isle of Wight. London is 70 miles northwest of Portsmouth and can be reached on the A3 motorway. The port at Portsmouth is a busy ferry and cargo facility that handles three million passengers annually.
As well as ferries from the Isle of Wight the port also has freight ferries to Portsmouth originating at Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre and St Malo in France, the Channel Islands, and the Spanish towns of Bilbao and Santander. Le Havre and Portsmouth are separated by 100 miles of sea and one of the more popular routes between England and the continent.
From Le Havre freight ferries to Portsmouth services are provided by LD Lines who run one daily crossing in each direction. Between March and September these crossings are supplemented by an extra daily hi-speed catamaran service that also offers passenger and freight services.
LD’s modern ship, Cote d’Albatre, plies the freight ferries to Portsmouth route throughout the year. The ship sails from Le Havre at 17.00 local time and arrives at Portsmouth International Harbour 5.5 hours later. Facilities onboard include passenger sleeping cabins, reclining seats, bar-cafés, a canteen, a games room and retail outlets.
Items for sale onboard are newspapers, books, toys, alcohol, tobacco products, scents, chocolate and electrical gadgets. Bookings for freight ferries to Newhaven can be made online or by calling enquiries at +44 800 9171201. Booking well in advance often gives savings.
