Gills Bay is situated to the northeast of Gills, a moderate sized city in the north of Scotland. The local attraction is the sunbathing seals that laze about on the shoreline, posing for travellers keen to photograph these wondrous animals. Gills Bay also boasts a modern ferry terminal, which connects the area to the Orkney Islands.
Pentland Ferries is the sea transport company that operates the crossing between Gills Bay and St Margaret’s Hope. The company has been operating since 2001, and currently sails the route three times each day. The vessels used are the MV Pentalina and MV Pentalina-B, which take about one hour to complete the journey. The vessels hold up to 250 passengers, 30 cars and about 9 lorries.
There are several convenient facilities on board the vessel. Even though the crossing is only relatively short, passenger comfort, safety and satisfaction are the highest priorities of Pentland Ferries. Some of the amenities and services include a canteen, restrooms, restful seating and an outdoor viewing deck.
For those passengers with mobility difficulties, both the Gills Bay and St Margaret’s Hope port terminals are equipped with specially designed restrooms, ramp access and other facilities for able and disabled passengers alike.
The town of St Margaret’s Hope is located in the Orkney Islands. Nestled at the gateway to a picturesque bay, St Margaret’s Hope is the third largest town in the area, yet is relatively modest in size when compared to other UK towns on the mainland. Nevertheless, a fine selection of restaurants and accommodation are available in close proximity to the port itself.
The ferry port at St Margaret’s Hope is quite small and offers basic facilities for passengers arriving and departing. However, due to the close distance to the village, most passengers can walk to local shops and restaurants from the terminal.
