Hanko exudes a true coastal town experience. With a laid-back ambiance, wooden style housing, scenic horizon views and a plethora of yearly water activities, Hanko is a magnificent destination not to be missed. Located 1 hour, 30 minutes from the capital city, Helsinki, Hanko is also an important gateway into Finland.

Unfortunately, the passenger ferry service into Hanko is no longer in service. Nevertheless, freight vessels still operate into and out of Hanko’s port on a yearly schedule. Today, the port specializes in car and fresh produce imports, and paper exports. Due to Hanko’s southern location, winter does not pose a problem, unlike other Finnish ports that deal with harbour ice sheets throughout the colder months.

While passenger ferries were still in operation, most of the crossings were to Rostock in Germany, and were serviced by Superfast Ferries on a daily schedule. However, since the stoppage of this service, most passengers now connect to Finland via the ports of Helsinki and Turku. Freight services from Rostock into Hanko occurs almost daily, and is handled by two main companies – Superfast Ferries and Viking Ferries.

The Superfast Ferries can take both accompanied and unaccompanied freight on its routes. There are a number of facilities onboard that are designed to allow drivers a relaxing break for behind the wheel, such as a lounge that offers delectable cuisines, comfortable seating, movies, games, and a bar. The journey takes about 20 hours, therefore passenger comfort is a high-priority.

The Hanko Port offers expedient access to various major cities within Finland, particularly along highways 51, 52, and 53, which lead to cities like Helsinki, Turku and Salo. The railroad network has been vastly improved over recent years, and now links Hanko port to the rest of the country, provided quick, easy and stress-free travel.
