Boasting one of the UK’s most prosperous sea ports, Harwich is located along the River Stour in England’s Essex County. The ferry port is owned and serviced by Hutchingson Port Holding’s, who are recognised as the largest port operators the world over. Harwich Port provides both passenger ferry and passenger cruise services across the North Sea.
Stena Line Ferries make crossings between Harwich and the Hook of Holland several times daily. The super ferries used by Stena Line are the Stena Britannica and the Stena Hollandica, taking about 6 hours and 15 minutes to complete the crossing. Both vessels have recently experienced a multimillion pound upgrade, offering unrivalled luxury, comfort and style onboard.
DFDS Seaways operates crossings between Harwich and Esbjerg (a coastal town on the west of Denmark), about three times a week. However, during the summer peak season, this number increases to four or five crossings within a week to cope with the high passenger numbers. The vessel handling the crossing is the relatively new and modern designed, Dana Sirena – a Ro-pax carrier with a capacity of 600 passengers and just under 200 spacious cabins.
There are a wide-variety of excellent facilities in and around the Harwich Port passenger terminal. Some of these include a bar, internet café, disabled and baby changing restrooms, foreign currency machine, a railway station and vending machines. For those passengers wanting to stay nearby the port and do some shopping, there are various retail outlets within a 10 minute stroll from the terminal.
The cruise ferry port is located adjacent to the ferry port. There are about three or four cruise line departures each month, travelling along a selection of routes. Some of these include the Scandinavian – Russia line, the Norwegian Fjord line, and the Historic Britain and Ireland line. The cruise terminal is custom-built to cope with large passenger numbers, equipped with expedient luggage and passenger facilities.
