Helsinki to Stockholm ferries are the most scenic and leisurely way to travel between the capital cities of Finland and Sweden. The Russians rebuilt Helsinki when it became Finland’s capital in 1812, and many of its buildings remain reminiscent of St Petersburg. Stockholm, a city built on 14 islands and connected by 50 bridges, is filled with green spaces and fascinating attractions.
Ferries plying these routes are managed by two companies, and the voyage typically takes 16 hours. Viking Lines Ferries provides daily Helsinki to Stockholm ferry service aboard the M/S Gabriella and M/S Mariella, stopping at the Finnish city of Mariehamn along the way. Both ferries leave Stockholm at 16:45 and arrive in Helsinki at 09:55 the following morning, then leave Helsinki at 17:30 and arrive in Stockholm at 09:40 the next morning.
Both the M/S Gabriella and M/S Mariella include a large choice of cabins ranging from luxury suites to economy berths, as well as conference halls, duty free shops, nightclubs, children’s areas, and several restaurants. A sauna and pool are located aboard the M/S Mariella, while the M/S Gabriella contains a casino.
Silja Line’s Serenade and Symphony ships also make daily Helsinki to Stockholm ferry trips at 17:00 each night from both cities. Both of these luxury ferries include spacious cabins, relaxing spas, gourmet restaurants, playrooms and water parks for children, and Promenade shopping streets resembling those found in European cities.
Despite Scandinavia’s staid reputation, passengers leaving Helsinki to Stockholm ferries will find a large variety of things to do in both cities. Helsinki, known as the ‘daughter of the Baltic,’ successfully combines international flair with a small town atmosphere. The spectacular Suomenlinna fortress includes a museum, restaurants, and theatres while remaining frozen in time. Most Stockholm attractions are located in its inner city, including its city hall, royal palace, and picturesque old town which has remained relatively unchanged since medieval times.
