The Port of Heysham is nestled upon Morecombe Bay, and boasts quite a reputable passenger and freight docking facility. Operating 24 hours a day, the port offers crossings to the Isle of Man and Ireland, departing and arriving from the port’s South Quay.
Heyshams port terminal boasts a variety of excellent facilities for passengers. Hungry patrons can satisfy their cravings at the Little Chef Express restaurant or the snack bar. There are other services available designed for passenger convenience, such as ATM’s, baby changing facilities, a TV lounge, and a children’s corner.
The SuperSeaCat Scotland makes connections between Heysham and Belfast, Northern Ireland. These routes take about four hours, and occur twice each day. The vessel is strictly a passenger service ferry, with no car, cargo or freight facilities available.
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company also provides crossings from Heysham, but to the Isle of Man’s main port, Douglas. During peak months, the Fastcraft Ferry is the speediest ferry, taking approximately two hours. However, also operating is a more conventional ferry, with a journey time of 3 hours, 45 minutes. The Ben-my-Chree ferry makes two connections each day, and has been in service since 1998.
Both ferries and the port itself offer a range of services for the disable passengers. Cabins, restrooms and onboard access have been designed to assist passengers with special requirements. However, it is recommended that patrons needing special attention notify ferry companies at the time of booking.
Heysham port provides easy access to the surrounding cities and counties of England through a number of means. The railway station is located just 50 meters from the passenger terminal, connecting visitors and locals to Manchester, Stockport and Bolton. The port is also extremely easy to get to via car or bus, with an estimated journey time of 90 minutes from Manchester and Liverpool.
