The port of Kapellskar is situated 90kms north of the Swedish capital, Stockholm. It has a short entrance tunnel and a good road network which makes it a very important gateway for travellers coming to Sweden. There are daily ferry services between Aland and Kapellskar and an onward ferry to Turku in Finland. More than 1.5 million passengers pass through the port annually and 2.3 million tonnes of freight passes through also.
Quay 2 at Kapellskar provides the service to Aland, whilst Quays 3 and 4 cater to services to Finland. The terminal’s facilities include a passenger terminal with public toilets, telephones and a convenience store. Whilst there is no restaurant inside the terminal there is a small café which opens in conjunction with ferry arrivals and departures.
All ferries have disabled facilities although it is advised to warn staff that you will require assistance when booking. The staff will then assist those who have difficulty boarding onto the vessel. Inside the passenger terminal, disabled facilities are good with wheelchair access and disabled toilets.
Viking line provides daily services to Mariehamn (Aland), which is 70kms away as well as onward connections to Turku in Finland. During the summer months Viking Line also provides a direct ferry service to Turku.
The road network connecting Kapellskar with the rest of the country is excellent, with a motorway connecting the port to Stockholm. There is no rail station at or near Kapellskar however there is a bus service which connects with the City terminal in Stockholm, making a number of stops on the way. Whilst there is no taxi stand at the terminal you can call to make a reservation from the terminal, however expect to wait for up to 20 minutes. There is free parking located not far from the terminal but motorists should be warned that it is unattended.
