The ferry route between Kiel in Germany, and Oslo in Norway is operated by the Norwegian ferry company, Color Line. The company has been operating the route since 1961 and ferries between Oslo and Kiel run daily. Color Line itself has been in business since 1990, originally made from two companies who have over 100 years history in the ferry business.
Color Line boasts that they are the easiest way to Norway from various European destinations and Kiel to Oslo is one of the most used of their ferry routes. The journey between the two cities is approximately 19 hours, with most of the journey being overnight.
As it is an overnight ferry ride, all passengers have a cabin. There are a variety of cabins depending on the passenger’s budget or taste. There are ones with a sea view, promenade view, or inside and there are also higher class cabins (Color Class) and suites available as well as the standard ones.
Also on board the ferries are restaurants and shops, including a duty-free shop, for the passengers to enjoy; play areas for children and a ‘Captain Kid’ restaurant with special kids’ menus. Select ships have live shows, fitness centres and spas and all have onboard casinos.
Most of the company’s ferry fleet are very modern, as a fleet renewal scheme was undertaken from 2004. There are six ferries in use on four routes, all of which are fully equipped and checked for everyone’s safety. There are extensive safety procedures in place, and all staff are fully trained in case of an emergency.
Ferries run daily at 14:00, at either end of the route, arriving at the destination at 10:00 the next day. It is a long journey, but you will be very well entertained and taken care of onboard. On the Color Line website, there is a timetable of available ferries.
