Kissamos is a port town located on the western coast of the island of Crete. There are two ports at the town; a new modern port which receives passengers from the other Greek Islands and an older, smaller fishing port. The new port is located next to the road to Falassarna and is well equipped with facilities to cater to passengers passing though, as well as cargo ships.
Travellers using the port of Kissamos will avoid the busier and often frantic port of Pireaus, Crete’s main port. In addition they can arrive from the Peloponesse and begin the tour of Crete from the west to the east of the island. The port is a short distance from the town centre thus within reach of restaurants, shops, hotels as well as the towns tourist information centre, which is useful as the port has limited facilities.
ANEN ferries offer sailings from Kissamos to Kythira, Antikithira, Kalamata, Piraeus and Githio. ANEN run four servings per week from Kissamos dependant on demand as well as local weather conditions.
Disabled travellers will find they are well catered too on all ferries leaving Kissamos, with good wheelchair access onboard all vessels as well as disabled toilets. Staff will assist with boarding for those in need however it is advised to notify staff when making reservations.
There is no rail network on the island of Crete, however the road network is decent. As the island is not large, road is the best way to get around, with most of the countryside accessible. The National Highway, which runs parallel with the northern coast of Crete, conveniently allows visitors access to a majority of the islands main towns and cities. Buses run from Kissamos to Chania and Heraklion on the east of the island.
