Newcastle Port is located 11kms east of downtown Newcastle in north east England. It has long been a familiar sight for ferry passengers sailing from England to other European countries and is very well connected to the city centre.
The modern ferry terminals of Newcastle Port, also known as the Port of Tyne, are operated by DFDS Seaways. Over 700,000 ferry passengers arrive at Newcastle Port each year, and facilities here include six check in desks, automatic baggage handling, and covered walkways.
Other Newcastle Port amenities include a coffee shop, a vending machine, a bar, a bureau de change, an arcade, toilets, and changing facilities. An ATM, shopping centre, and tourist information centre are located nearby and the city centre is just a short drive away and home to the largest indoor shopping centre in the whole of England.
Today the main ferry route leaving from Newcastle is a leisurely overnight cruise to the Ijmuiden port of Amsterdam. Passengers are able to drive their vehicles aboard either the King of Scandinavia or Princess of Norway, both of which leave Newcastle Port at 17:00 and sail into Ijmuiden at 09:30 the following morning. Both ferries feature a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and cinemas, and the King of Scandinavia also includes a casino.
Other ferry routes between Newcastle Port and the Norwegian cities of Bergen, Stavanger, Haugesund, and Kristiansand have recently ended, as has a ferry service from Newcastle Port to Gothenburg, Sweden.
Newcastle Port is easily accessible by car, bus, or metro from the city centre. Buses frequently run between Newcastle upon Tyne and the ferry terminal, and metro trips usually last about 20 minutes, as well as a further 20 minute walk to the terminal. Newcastle upon Tyne’s most popular tourist attractions include the Metro Centre, markets, its lively nightlife, its numerous art galleries, and its close proximity to the starting point of Hadrian’s Wall.
