Piraeus is the port serving Athens and is situated about 10kms away from the city. The ferry service from Piraeus to Rethymnon is operated by Anek Lines who use modern ferries to complete journeys from the mainland of Greece to the many of the Greek islands. Travel time between the two ports is about 9 hours, 30 minutes.
The port is centrally located in Piraeus and can be reached easily by road. Taxi fares are cheap in Greece and there are taxi ranks at entrances and exits. The ferry terminal is linked to Athens and the airport by bus and by the Athens metro system.
The Piraeus ferry port has good facilities including a bureau de change, cash machines, bars and restaurants. If time permits passengers can leave their belongings at the left-luggage storage facility and make use of the nearby seaside tavernas offering some excellent food.
Anek Lines has been operating ferry services for more than 40 years and has a modern fleet of ferries. Onboard are a range of shops providing cosmetics, books and magazines and a range of designer products. A good selection of dining options includes a restaurant and a self service diner.
Passengers can make use of the gaming machines and there are children’s play-areas. The air-conditioned passenger lounges provide excellent views and have airplane style seating. Cabins, including those adapted for disabled passengers, are available. Anek Line ferries are easy to get around with lifts and escalators. Some ferries have a disco and internet access.
Rethymnon is the capital of Rethymno Prefecture and well linked by road to all of the main towns and holiday resorts in Crete. The ferry terminal boasts the usual array of facilities providing toilets and somewhere to get a snack and drink. The bus station is quite close and easily reached by taxi.
