Over the last five years, Reykjavik has become quite a popular hub for tourism, travel, trade and commercial activities. Its strategic location on the North Atlantic Ocean makes it an important player for Iceland as well as all of its Nordic neighbours. Apart from being an important seaport, Reykjavik Port is also a meeting place for cruise ships.
Reykjavik Port is located within the Old Harbour, which is divided into two sections; the East and West harbours. For those that wish to access Iceland, several cruise ships make visits and layover stops at Reykjavik Port throughout the summer months. There are a few cargo ships with a bit of room for passengers across the Atlantic. Because these seats go fairly fast, it is best to make prior arrangements before travelling.
Eimskip is a cargo shipping company that offers passenger cabins onboard its vessel. Passengers may jump onboard and choose from a handful of destinations to and from Reykjavik’s ferry port. Every two weeks, Eimskip ferry services offer routes from Reykjavik to ports in cities such as Copenhagen, Hamburg, Aarhus, Helsinborg and The Faroe Islands.
Facilities onboard the vessels and at Reykjavik’s ferry port are quite limited. Passengers travelling with disabilities may find the experience a bit challenging as special needs services and facilities are not plentiful. It is best to contact the port authorities to make any necessary prior arrangements before travelling.
If you are arriving at Reykjavik’s ferry port from areas around Iceland, there are streets and roads that provide easy access. It is important to take note that roads further away from the city are gravelled and more difficult to navigate. There is also the Reykjavik Bus Service system available, which departs from Hlemmur and Laekjartog every 20 to 30 minutes.
